The world’s largest medical device companies have headquarters locations spanning 15 countries and four continents, according to an analysis of our 2023 Medtech Big 100.

While some of the largest medtech companies have their headquarters in the U.S., our comprehensive Medtech Big 100 list (which ranks the largest medical device companies by revenue) shows that the reach of medtech extends beyond U.S. borders.

Medtech Big 100 analysis: Sales grow, jobs decrease, R&D spending climbs

That said, the U.S. is the leading country for medical device company headquarters. Notably, California houses 18 companies, showcasing the Golden State’s versatility as a research and development hub. Massachusetts is also a sizeable medtech hub with five Medtech Big 100 companies clustered around Boston. Minnesota, where Medtronic and 3M operate, is also a centralized location for medtech innovation. (Though Medtronic — the world’s largest medical device company — lists its official headquarters as Dublin, Ireland, the company’s operational headquarters remain Fridley, Minnesota.)

However, medtech extends well beyond the borders of the U.S.

Germany, Switzerland, Japan and other countries are significant locations for medical device manufacturing. Japan in particular is home to 15 companies on the Medtech Big 100, while Germany has six Big 100 HQs and Switzerland has five.

Explore the interactive map below to see where the world’s 100 largest medical device companies are headquartered.
